Yale® is the US subsidiary (based in Connecticut) of Assa Abloy AB. Who is Assa Abloy AB you ask? Assa Abloy AB is a Swedish company manufacturing and selling home and business security products and services ranging from door and entry locks, doors, gates and entrance automation and more all along this line of product. Their product line also includes many smart home (and business) products such as entry controls with with keys, ID cards, tags (for example, a keyfob), mobile access and biometric identity verification systems. The company was created in 1994 when they were spun-off from the Swedish security firm Securitas AB.
The US division, Yale, has been manufacturing home security products since the mid-1800’s. So they know their stuff! They offer an expansive product line door hardware and locks including an extensive range of residential hardware options although their recent innovation – like many home security and door lock companies – is focused on the smart home and electronic door locks.
Yale’s recent innovation has been across the expansive home security market – ranging from their core line of Yale electronic door locks to their safes and smart storage products (you can visit their hub on Amazon to see the various products offered – and deals available!). At some point or another, you’ve put your hands on a Yale lock – they not only manufacture the Yale electronic door lock, but also the traditional construction or builder grade pass-through, passage door locking or non-locking interior knobs.
Yale electronic door locks are placed into one of the following product lines or product categories. Of course, like many other manufacturers, some product cross over multiple categories depending on the level of technology and innovation in a particular product. But let’s take a 30,000 foot view at their products.
Yale Assure Digital Deadbolt Locks
The Yale Assure family of electronic door locks are one of their top selling product families. These are somewhat “simple” keypad locks for your home. I say simple, but some products do include smart home connectivity and bluetooth access. Given the name recognition and loyalty among Assure owners, they are smartly innovating on this product line and extending the brand name. Their newest Yale Assure Lock SL is sleek and has some pretty nifty features for newer users of smart home door locks.
Nest x Yale Electronic Door Lock
Yale has partnered with Google, one of the most innovative company’s in the smart home market (among other industries!). The Nest Yale Electronic Door Lock (read our Nest x Yale Lock review!) isn’t that much different than their Assure line or electronic door locks, except for the connectivity with Google. This lock works with Google Assistant to lock your door, report any status change and integrate with Google’s Routines.
Yale Pro™ SL Electronic Door Lock
Yale says the Yale Pro™ SL line of Yale electronic door locks is “Built for the Pros. Designed for the Home.” One core difference to this line than the Assure, for example is that these electronic door locks do not have a keyed option. These are key-free electronic deadbolts with Z-Wave Plus for interconnectivity and can be purchased with a touchscreen or keypad. They rave about their simple installation and that is it can be added to dozens of Z-Wave smart home and alarm systems with one-touch enrollment.
Yale Mechanical Hardware
This is the “traditional” Yale line of door locks, door knobs and door levers. Nothing smart, nothing innovative. Just a nice looking line of knobs and levers for all style home. You can see the full line of Yale Mechanical Hardware here.
Yale NexTouch Electronic Door Lock
This is Yale’s electronic door lock for small businesses. These provide a connected security solution for small businesses and provide peace-of-mind for their business access. The Yale nexTouch is the “simple and secure way to manage access, reduce liability and rekeying costs and monitor your small business”.
Yale Multi-Family Solutions
We won’t spend a lot of time reviewing the Yale Mult-family solutions here. These Yale electronic door locks are primarily for multi-family and multi-unit projects, specifically those which commonly requiring rekeying. For example, multi-family residences, assisted living facilities, public restrooms and more.
Other Yale Products
Yale also manufactures other products which you can find on their website or on retailers like Amazon. They make a smart line of safes (like hotel safes rather than keyed safes) which is great for homes. Additionally, they also are launching an additional line of smart storage products in 2020.
Yale Electronic Door Lock Reviews
Yale Assure Lock SL
