Installation of the Kwikset Smartcode 888 is simple and fast assuming your door is currently has a backset of either 2-3/8 or 2-3/4 inches wide and a hole that is either 2-1/8 or 1-1/2 inches wide. If yours falls outside these specs, you’ll likely have to re-drill the hole or find another electronic deadbolt. If your door does, then let’s get it installed – all you need is a screwdriver!

Customer reviews definitely point to the simplicity of installation as well – it’s just not the pros! It has been rated 4.6 out of 5.0 stars for “easy to install” on Amazon. Some of the quotes you’ll find:

Easy to install and program. It took less than 10 minutes to switch out my old deadbolt lock for this one.

I followed the instructions carefully and was able to install and program this lock in about 15 minutes, replacing an existing deadbolt. This is my first keyless lock …

Install and programming was easy and [sic] accurate directions.

But as we’ve warned before and the Kwikset Smartcode 888 is no different – if you’ve never worked with your doorknobs and especially deadbolts, it can take quite a bit more time than what you read.

Programming is also easy. One fair warning – don’t forget to delete or change both the default user code and the master code. Often a factory reset will clear the preprogrammed codes. These are shipped by default and aren’t unique to your product which can certainly pose a security threat.

Kwikset’s SmartKey┬« technology is very user friendly as well – you can quickly re-key the lock in seconds (ok, let’s say a few minutes!) in three easy steps with the provided. So no worries just replacing a single deadbolt on the house.

The Kwikset Smartcode 888 is a sleek lock, interior and out. Kwikset’s goal for this line was to create a dramatically reduced interior size and this has been accomplished. This simple (mostly) rectangle design has always been a favorite of ours.

As with most Kwikset locks and door knobs, you can find this in each of their three most common finishes – polished brass, Venetian bronze or satin nickel. The brass and nickel finishes are quite close and often indistinguishable from many of the other brands on the market as well.  The satin nickel – always a best seller – is shown here. You can pair this design with many different Kwikset handles available on the market.

A nice added feature – the lock Button remains backlit for 30 seconds to help lock and unlock the door in the evenings or early hours.

Security shouldn’t be a concern with the Kwikset Smartcode 888. Like most Kwikset deadbolts, it is a certified ANSI/BHMA A156.36 deadbolt. As stated on the BHMA website, “the ANSI/BHMA A156.36 establishes requirements for Auxiliary Locks, and includes dimensional criteria and five classifications of tests: operational, cycle, strength, security and, finish.”

Like many Kwikset residential deadbolts, falls in the lowest grouping, a grade 3. This is defined as an average, everyday use deadbolt which will provide an acceptable level of security for homes. Most basic builder quality deadbolts installed fall into this category. For most uses, this is enough when paired with an alarm, camera system or even if you just live in a dense residential area. Those that require more security may opt for a higher grade lock.

While it wasn’t graded much higher, Kwikset is talking much about the inability to pick the entire Smartcode line of electronic deadbolts. Check this video out for more!

There are a lot of options with the Kwikset Smartcode 888. While Kwikset doesn’t have it’s own app to control the lock, the certified Z-Wave Plus with the Z-Wave 500 chipset allow this smart keypad deadbolt to connect with some of the biggest and most popular names in smart home technology.

You’ll have to refer to your technology’s manual, but generally it’s easy to integrate with the services below to add this component to your smart home and even get notifications of entries and exits.

There aren’t any accessories available per se. The big selling point is the ability to connect to the other technologies and integrate the Kwikset Smartcode 888 into your smart home technology.

But, you may need the following at some point in the future so it’s worth bookmarking these products should the need ever arise. The Smartkey Rekeying accessories can always be helpful (it comes with one, but they are easy to “lose” somewhere in your home. Additionally, this line of levers, knobs and mechanical parts may always been needed for a new door or replaced deadbolt.

Starting for about $120 on Amazon, this lock is a great entry point for adding an electronic deadbolt into your existing smart home technology. While it’s just a grade 3 lock, it’s a great value for the price point and is really sufficient for most suburban residential areas. Unless you’ve upgraded your locks, you most likely have a grade 3 lock already!

Buying a Kwikset is never a bad idea – they have such a wide diverse product catalog, that you’ll always be able to extend the styles and designs through your home, inside and out. Plus, the warranty is great and the design of this deadbolt is attractive – very slim and sleek, simple and modern to match almost any home.
