Kwikset Powerbolt 2 Review

A budget keyless deadbolt from one of the mainstays in this space – Kwikset! The Kwikset Powerbolt 2 is a budget keyless entry deadbolt from Kwikset, one of the biggest names in the industry. This simple deadbolt gives you the keyless / keypad access you need for your convenience but doesn’t skimp on its security. Not designed for smart home users, but an amazing addition at a low price for those that are looking for a keyless access point into their home.

If there was ever a plug-n-play lock, the Kwikset Powerbolt 2 is pretty much it! The technical installation is simple enough and fits most standard holes that already exist. If you are installing the deadbolt on a new or a door without a predrilled hole, templates are provided to make it easy enough. Though you’d still need a hole drill set which you can find at your local hardware store or here on Amazon

Even customers agree on Amazon that installation was easy. They’ve rated the Kwikset Powerbolt 2 a 4.6 out of 5 for “ease of installation.” They’ve said things like Easy to install, install was a breeze, and done in just 15 minutes!. All signs pointing to simplicity. But with any DIY project – those with little experience or odd sized doors/custom construction, may always find things a little more challenging!

Programming the codes was easy as well. One fair warning – and a few mention this in customer reviews we’ve seen – you’ve got to remember to delete the default Kwikset Powerbolt 2 pre-programmed code. If you forget, not only will it use up one of your codes, anyone could gain access to your home as it’s default across all products AND easy to guess.

The Kwikset Powerbolt 2 is a simple lock, with very few bells and whistles. Many guests prefer to use this lock for a secondary door where aesthetics may not be as important solely for the convenience of having a keyless entry to a home, such as the interior garage entrance, mud-room or back door.

KWIKSET POWERBOLT 2As with most Kwikset locks and door knobs, you can find this in each of their three most common finishes – polished brass, Venetian bronze or satin nickel. The brass and nickel finishes are quite close and often indistinguishable from many of the other brands on the market as well.  The satin nickel is shown here.

We find this lock blends well for most homes. It won’t stand out either way! While no-one will call out it’s beauty, they won’t notice it as being out of place either. Basically, there to serve a job that it does do well.

For such a low price, the Kwikset Powerbolt 2 is secure enough for most homes. It is a certified ANSI/BHMA A156.36 deadbolt. As stated on the BHMA website, “the ANSI/BHMA A156.36 establishes requirements for Auxiliary Locks, and includes dimensional criteria and five classifications of tests: operational, cycle, strength, security and, finish.”

For the security rating of the deadbolt, this Kwikset deadbolt falls in the lowest grouping, a grade 3. This is defined as an average, everyday use deadbolt which will provide an acceptable level of security for homes. Most basic builder quality deadbolts installed fall into this category. For most uses, this is enough when paired with an alarm, camera system or even if you just live in a dense residential area. Those that require more security may opt for a higher grade lock.

No bells and whistles available with the Kwikset Powerbolt 2! This deadbolt is a keyless keypad deadbolt. Nothing more, nothing less.

Nothing available except more deadbolts for additional entrances! The Kwikset Powerbolt 2 is a standalone deadbolt for your home.

Starting as low as $55 on Amazon, this lock gets the job done. It’s not the highest grade secure lock, but for many of you reading this, you really don’t need a higher or more expensive lock. As we’ve mentioned in throughout this review, this lock is recommended most as a secondary entrance.

Our final opinion is that we won’t be installing this on our front door, but it works great for the inner garage door, the mudroom or other secondary entrance of your home. And if the connectivity isn’t a factor – such as for kids, dog walkers, etc – this lock is an amazing value.
